Edward Berggren, Self-Portrait

Edward Berggren, Self-Portrait

A striking self-portrait by Swedish artist, Edward Berggren (1876-1961). It’s a captivating portrayal that’s been painted with confidence and energy. Various drips and splashes give the work a sense of dynamism and vigour. While, in a few areas, such as the ring on his right hand, the oils have been built up to give a raised appearance.

Berggren was a talented painter that trained at the Academy in Stockholm and the Académie Colarossi in Paris. He also undertook various study trips to Europe, spending most of his time in Rome.

His portraits include several well-known figures such as Prince Carl (1861–1951) and actress Stina Hedberg (1887–1981) and he’s currently represented at the Delaware Art Museum, USA.

Size including frame
17” x 20” / 43cm x 51cm
Year of creation
c. 1915
Provenance
Sweden
Condition
The canvas is unstretched and framed flat which is a little unusual for an oil painting. It’s likely that this work was discovered fairly recently in a portfolio and saved. It’s in fairly good condition with no major issues. The beige areas you can see are paint rather than paint loss and the white area at the bottom is intentional.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
