George Herbert Buckingham Holland

Still Life With Flowers

A lively mid-20th-century oil on canvas depicting a vase with chrysanthemums by English artist, George Herbert Buckingham Holland (1901-1987).

It’s been painted with vigour and it draws influence from the post-impressionists.

Holland was born in Northampton and studied at Northampton School of Art, Leicester College of Art, and Chelsea Polytechnic. He exhibited widely during his life including at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. This particular piece was shown at the Royal Academy and bears an exhibition label on the reverse.

We acquired the painting from an auction of his works, which were previously with a collector who bought directly from the artist.

The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within an impressive gilded scroll and foliate frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 23½” x 29” / 59cm x 74cm
Year of creation: 1944
Provenance: England
Condition: A few minor paint losses but overall very presentable. Frame with some age-related wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
