William Hill Thomson, Portrait Of A Lady

William Hill Thomson, Portrait Of A Lady

This sublime 1930s portrait by William Hill Thomson (1882-1956) depicts a stylish young lady wearing a pink top and a pearl necklace. She carries a demure expression, enigmatic, gazing back at us across the decades.

Thomson was known as an accomplished miniaturist and he’s rendered this larger work with an exquisite level of detail. Note the light on the pearls and the shading on her left cheek.

It’s an elegant portrayal that captures the spirit of the early 30s.

Signed in the lower right and framed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
