Portrait Of A Victorian Flower Girl

Regular price £349.00

DESCRIPTION

A charming full-length portrait of a young Victorian flower girl carrying a basket of assorted British flora.

Flower girls were a common sight in Victorian cities, particularly London, and many walked the streets having been sent out by their parents. Often dressed in tattered clothes and broken bonnets, they carried baskets laden with plants in the hope of selling a few to passing pedestrians.

Some of the girls were orphans and sold flowers out of sheer necessity - one can only imagine what that would’ve been like. This beautiful image tells their story so well and sometimes a picture is truly worth a thousand words.

This painting is probably based on an older version as it dates to the early 20th century.
