Portrait Of A Gentleman With A White Glove

Regular price £795.00

DESCRIPTION

A fine half-length continental portrait depicting a country gentleman wearing a frock coat, white shirt, blue tie and white glove. His right hand is partially hidden behind the opening of his coat.

The style of this gentleman’s outfit fits with the fashion of the 1830s-1840s. Frock coats were increasingly popular and had replaced tail coats for day wear. These tended to be calf-length and often double-breasted. Shoulders were sloped and waists were tight, much like the style that females adopted around the same time.

It’s also interesting to note that he’s standing outside with some greenery clearly visible behind him, as perhaps this suggests his fondness for Romanticism (either that or he’s a landowner). The Romantic Era reached its peaked between 1800-1850 and emphasised emotion, individualism, and the glorification of nature. It was, in part, a reaction to the Industrial Revolution and the rationalisation of the natural world.

This beautiful portrait originated in Germany and one of the leading lights of Romanticism was German artist, Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840).

Housed in an ornate gilded frame that’s been superbly stuccoed with decorative botanical motifs.
