A characterful portrait of a young French boy in a beret by English artist, Lucy Margaret Buck (1860-1911). We love the young man’s characterful and his sideways glance.
Lucy Margaret Buck was born in Ipswich and was a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club where she exhibited in 1881 and 1883. She’s also exhibited twice at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
A label on the reverse indicates that the canvas originated in Paris so it’s plausible that she encountered this young man in the French capital. It’s intriguing to consider who he was - perhaps a friend’s son.
The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within a good later frame.
