This enchanting early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Herman Jensen (1893-1941) depicts a seated woman playing the banjo before a window.

Scenes with musicians are most fascinating as they conjure up inaudible sounds. Can you imagine the lively vibrations of song echoing around this quaint interior? It’s a gentle and sensitive piece - with the figure almost silhouetted against the brightness of the view beyond. Perhaps it’s the artist’s own home.

In 1914 Jensen married Olga Helene Andersson and she would’ve been around 26 when he produced this.

Herman Jensen

Danish artist Herman Jensen is predominantly known as a painter of spirited landscapes, figures and quiet interior scenes. He trained in Paris and is considered to be an important member of the ‘Bonholm School’ of artists. His works, particularly his plein-air views, often blend the confident rhythm of French expressionism with the cool mood of his homeland. He’s represented at the Met, New York, with ‘the Violinist’.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
