Théodore Rousseau (Follower), Sketch

Théodore Rousseau (Follower), Sketch

This spirited early 20th-century oil painting depicts an evening view across picturesque fields. It’s a moment the artist enjoyed. Distant embers of sunlit yellow are broken by a cloud - as light drips across a landscape rippling with suggestions. Flickers of fire amid a scene close to darkness.

It's in the manner of the great Barbizon School painter, Théodore Rousseau (1812-1867).

Signed in the lower left, inscribed on the reverse and framed.

Medium: Oil on panel
Overall size: 15½” x 13½” / 39cm x 34cm
Year of creation: c. 1900
Condition: Artwork presents well. Frame with some light wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
