Claude-Marie Reignier, Autumnal Landscape With Track

Claude-Marie Reignier, Autumnal Landscape With Track

An easy-going impressionistic landscape painting by French painter, Claude-Marie Reignier (1870-1954). You can almost feel the chill in the air as the breeze rolls over the open countryside.

It’s very likely that Reignier painted this ‘en plein air’ (outside) while sat with his brushes admiring the view. Reignier often chose to paint using oils on paper, which would’ve made it easier for him to transport his equipment. He’s known to have painted around the areas of Lyon and The Dauphiné in Southwestern France, so perhaps he lived in this region.

If you look closely, you’ll notice that he has an interesting technique whereby he sketches in some of the details over areas of blocked in colour. At first glance, it seems that the underdrawing is still visible but in fact, the sketched lines are on top.

The painting is housed within a gilded frame and glazed. Signed in the lower left.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
