British School, Portrait Of A Woman In A Turquoise Coat

A fine mid-century half-length portrait depicting a stylish woman in a turquoise coat by artist, WP Miller.

During the 1950s, fashion trends were often set by Hollywood actors and actresses. Stars such as Sophia Loren, Lucille Ball, and Audrey Hepburn ignited the imagination with their iconic outfits and hairstyles.

This particular lady is probably wearing a soft bob, which was a less-enhanced version of the bouffant. Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe embraced this style and perhaps our lady felt inspired. She certainly carries a celebrity look - a tad Miss Moneypenny.

The portrait is signed/dated in the lower left.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
