Mads Stage, River Landscape With Tree

Mads Stage, River Landscape With Tree

This enchanting 20th-century drawing by Danish artist Mads Stage (1922-2004) captures the lonely grandeur of an old tree before a twisting river landscape. Its leafless branches intertwine with a sense of timeless mystery and strength.

The composition is brilliantly conceived and beautifully constructed. The horizon perfectly positioned to bring weight and harmony. Note the scattering of small firs, which amplify the main tree. And the broad river, which adds interest and depth.

Mads Stage was married in 1949, the year this was produced. Could it represent the passing of time? The end of a chapter as another one begins?

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
