Bonaventura Peeters (Follower), Marine Scene With Ships & Stormy Waters

Bonaventura Peeters (Follower), Marine Scene With Ships & Stormy Waters

This drama-filled 19th-century marine scene depicts three ships battered by wild conditions. It’s in the manner of Flemish artist Bonaventura Peeters the Elder (1614-1652) who was a master at capturing oceanic theatrics.

Here, the ships are thrown like corks as the violent waves rise, crash and fall within a rocky port with ruins. Two figures look on from a clifftop as the sailors cling on for their lives.

Housed within a later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
