18th-Century Italian School Still Life With Flowers, Peaches & Figs

18th-Century Italian School Still Life With Flowers, Peaches & Figs

An impressive early 18th-century Italian school still life with an array of flowers, peaches and figs. We imported the piece from Germany but it’s more representative of Italian flower painting from the period.

This iconic style of still life was originally made popular by the Dutch old masters in the 17th-century when many of the flowers depicted were considered highly exotic and precious. In fact, it was often cheaper to hire an artist to paint a bouquet rather than buy the originals.

The painting is housed within a beautiful 18th-century giltwood frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 34½” x 30” / 88cm x 76cm
Year of creation: c. 1720
Provenance: Germany
Condition: Craquelure as you would expect with a few minor paint losses but overall very presentable. Frame with some light age-related wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
