Joseph Thors, Rural Landscape With Riverbank

Joseph Thors, Rural Landscape With Riverbank

A beautiful 19th-century landscape painting depicting a Summer’s day in the countryside by Dutch artist, Joseph Thors (c. 1835-1920). In the foreground, we see the riverbank gently climbing towards a central point, while a tree leans with roots exposed to the water. A solitary figure, perhaps a shepherd, stands alongside a fence - before a flock of sheep that graze in a field behind him.

Thors spent most of his life working in England but also travelled back to his native Holland from time to time. He’s recorded as having lived in London and Birmingham. He exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, the British Institution, and the Society of British Artists. 14 of his works are held within public collections.

The painting is signed and held within a 19th-century gilt frame with foliate decoration.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
