This fine pair of mid-19th-century companion portraits depict a splendidly-attired couple.

He’s dressed in a dapper three-quarter length coat, waistcoat, shirt and cravat. While she wears an elegant bell-shaped dress with her hair centre-parted.

Both have knowing expressions and a misty depth behind their eyes. The artist has captured a sense of British romanticism and conveyed a bond to brace the centuries.

Housed within their original gilt frames and glazed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
