M Corper, Pastoral Scene With Distant Hills

M Corper, Pastoral Scene With Distant Hills

A peaceful English pastoral scene depicting a shepherd with a small flock before an undulant landscape. This picturesque view provides a window into a simpler time when the air was clean and the trees stood for hundreds of years.

Paintings such as this were ever-popular with city-dwelling Victorians who sought to escape the smoggy realities of increasing urbanisation.

Little is known about the artist, M Corper, but they were clearly influenced by the strong British tradition for romantic landscape painting.

Signed in the lower left and housed within a good later frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 33½” x 25½” / 85cm x 65cm
Year of creation: c. 1870
Condition: One small patched repair. Areas of craquelure but the paint layer is stable. Frame in good condition with some light wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
