Axel Schovelin, Summer’s Day In Zealand

Axel Schovelin, Summer’s Day In Zealand

This joyous landscape painting by Danish artist Axel Schovelin (1827-1893) depicts a beautiful view in Zealand with undulant scenery and picturesque woodland. On our right, a mother and her two sons are resting by an old track where several sheep graze.

Beyond them, a glimpse of distant hills, which are gently painted in lighter values. While in the foreground, a stream runs horizontally by our feet - the abundant foliage rendered with precision.

Schovelin was a master of light and enjoyed the spacious views in this part of Denmark.

Signed/dated in the lower right and housed within a handsome gilt frame with foliate decoration.

Please note that this painting will need to be crated if shipped overseas. A cost for the crate will be added on during checkout.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
