Hubert Heissat

Boudoir

Hubert Heissat

Boudoir

A sensuous swirling interior scene depicting a lady and her maid by artist, Hubert Heissat (1880-1911).

It’s a masterclass in expression with every angle softened and each curve reiterating femininity. Note how the female form is echoed throughout the room - particularly in the chair, table, and vase. It’s a work that speaks of sexuality - the artist’s attempt at capturing a mood.

The lady has turned to face us, fully exposed with fingers flirtatiously running through her hair. She's pre-occupied - perhaps preparing herself for the evening ahead.

Hubert Heissat trained at the École Régionale des Beaux-Arts in Amiens and later at the Académie Julian in Paris. He worked in a similar style to the post-impressionists who used colour and form to express an emotion rather than simply render a likeness. During his short lifetime, he exhibited widely including at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.

The painting is signed in the lower right and bears an exhibition label in the lower left.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
