Grandma’s Chair

This charming 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Holger Løvgreen (1885-1966) depicts ‘Grandma’s Chair’, which stands quietly in a corner by a window.

The seat appears well used and a blanket is draped casually across the back.

Løvgreen was predominantly known for his landscapes and still lifes so it’s interesting to consider why he painted this quiet interior. It’s possible that his grandmother had recently passed away - was this her home? Alternatively, perhaps he inherited the chair earlier in life and used it himself.

Either way, it’s a sensitive piece imbued with the love and warmth of a comfortable family home.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
