George Hervey Garraway, Church Interior With Rood Screen

George Hervey Garraway, Church Interior With Rood Screen

A beautiful study of a church interior with a rood screen by West Indian painter, George Hervey Garraway (1846–1935).

Rood screens are a common feature of late medieval churches and can be found in many parts of Europe. It’s possible that this one is located outside of the UK due to the extensive colouring of the figures towards the top.

George Hervey Garraway was born in Dominica but lived for many years in Liverpool. He was a member of the Liverpool Academy of Arts and exhibited at their Autumn Exhibitions.

The painting is signed/dated in the lower right and housed within a later frame.

Medium: Oil on board
Overall size: 15½” x 13” / 39cm x 33cm
Year of creation: 1875
Provenance: England
Condition: Overall very presentable.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
