'Oriental Colours' Pears Print [William Stephen Coleman]

Regular price £149.00

DESCRIPTION

A beautiful original Pears print after a painting by British artist, William Stephen Coleman (1829-1904). It depicts a young girl watering a large pot of flowers, before a highly detailed oriental rug.

Between 1891 and 1925, Pears, the British soap manufacturer, issued a large Christmas annual that included various presentation prints. These were produced using a chromolithographic process, which gave them their crisp and vivid finish. One of the best known prints is after a painting entitled ‘Bubbles’ by John Everett Millais. It depicts a young boy looking upwards towards a large floating bubble that he’s created using a pipe, solution and bowl.

This particular print, by William Stephen Coleman, is one of the less common chromolithographs and we’re led to believe that it may even be the first. It’s beautifully rendered and still retains its vivid colourful appearance and highly ornate details.
