Portrait Of A Man With A Pipe

This early 20th-century portrait by French artist Alexandre Denonne (1879-1959) depicts a gentleman with a pipe. It’s energetically rendered with the paint applied in broad, spirited, brushmarks. Note the scarf, a cascade of white and blue, laid down with energy. While the hat derives its form from a central raised point.

Denonne was an accomplished painter of impressionism. His landscapes and scenes are similar in style to those of Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) who was probably a key influence during his training.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
