This exquisite portrait by British artist William Moore (1790-1851) depicts a young lady wearing a beautiful white dress with gigot sleeves.

It’s a gentle portrayal representing the romanticised ideals of the 1830s. The portrait dates to circa 1833 when gigot sleeves were voluminous and resembled a ‘leg-o-mutton’.

William Moore was a notable artist and the father of Albert Moore (1841-1893). He’s best known for his depiction of Charles Dickens and also referred to as William Moore of York or William Moore Senior.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
