Stories: Portrait Of An Older Gentleman

This man doesn’t know it, but he was quietly observed for many years by Balzac, who through his imagination turned him into the old man named Père Goriot, the subject of one of his greatest novels.

Goriot was a man with no money who still saved enough to give his dreadful ungrateful daughters a step up into sparkling society, at which point they promptly forgot him.

In this moment he has just knocked at one of their doors and been turned away by the maid. He goes to a cafe, orders half an absinthe as he can’t afford a whole one, and blames himself, not his cruel child. He must find more to give her. He must always give more.

From the imagination of a friend. 🖤
